For this shoot i am planing to use the material, paper in order to create curves and shapes by cutting, folding and layering sheets. The reason for this is that paper is an everyday item and the way that it can be moved and shaped to create things form 2D or 3D is beautiful in its own way.
Resources:
- Paper
- Nikon D3100, 18 - 55 mm camera
Techniques:
- RAW shooting
Research influence:
The idea from this shoot came from Moholy Nagy and his abstract photography work. As a result i wanted to do some more abstract pieces of work however i wanted it to fit with my theme of the everyday so i wanted to find one thing that i could photograph in many different ways at different angles. I liked his use of leading and C and S shaped curved lines. As a result i really wanted the subject / material i used to reflect that and as a result i had the idea of using paper. As well as this i wanted to look at his use of negative space and see i i could recreate that as well as inclue the C and S shaped curves.

Image Bank ( 5 images )
For this first image i choose this because i liked how all the overlapping coloured shapes make hundreds of different curves and there are circles in the mix to so there are circles. I t also reminds me of chaos and a chaotic space where there is to many different things to think about so it can become over powering.
This image was put in because i like how the repeating shape was used in order to form the same shape but large and out of the same shape but smaller versions. As well as this the background is a dark colour which has allowed a higher contrast so i think i should keep in mind the back ground i will have when taking the photos.
In this photo i like how you can see the next step of how to make the third dimensional object which in this case is a cone. I also like how the what seemed to once a full perfect circle is broken by the triangular cut taken out of it and it had already been folded before making one side higher than the other.
Best Photos ( 4- 6 )
In the first photo i was using ISO 100, F stop 5.6 and shutter speed 1/80. I really like how in this photo the paper as topped over and is spreading out, it almost reminds me of when a stone goes into water and it makes the water jump up and over.
In this photo i really like how the paper has been folded in the same way however has been place in opposite directions repeated. The way the tear drop shape also melts into the other below it is also quite interesting to me. They also create backwards S curves when put together and C curves individually.
For this photo i liked how I used the one shape four times in order to make one new shape and then photograph it from this angle. The reason i like it is because it is not completely flat. The fact you can see that the shapes don't completely sit on the surface flat reminds me of how a four leaved clover is flat either, and that is what that shape is of.
In this photo i used F stop 8 for a narrow focus specifically on the foreground. I really wanted to capture the curves of the page where it is almost spring like in the way the pieces all link and curve together. This forms a leading S curve line which tricks the eyes into thinking they can spiral around the photo almost creating the illusion that you can imagine what the other side was to look like.
For this photo i really like how the spiral have become three dimensional and was standing on its own. I wanted to show off the over all curve of the pieces as they all split apart at the top of the large C curve.
For the last photo i want to use the idea of negative space, which is the wood work. This allows me to create a repeating pattern and rows of curves which present the idea of making a full circle by the also complete circle in the top left hand corner. As well as this the angle i have taken this also reminds me of the WiFi symbol.
Needs Improvement
Firstly in this photo i liked the over all idea of the repeating pattern however i didn't like the angle it looks to flat and 2D. When i re took the photo i adjusted the angle i was taking it from and got DSC 0481 which then was one of my best photos due to the new angle.
In this photo i was trying to make the idea of a camera lens where it zooms in and out. I got the effect down as it does remind me of that however because the top layer doesn't centre the piece in the middle it doesn't work. As well as that the bit of negative space needed to have been more circular.
For this photo i don't like the angle, its to flat and the spiral used isn't evenly cut out. If i was to re take i would have a evenly cut out spiral and i would have zoomed in more to make use of my idea of negative space.
This final photo is ok however the spiral is uneven again and not centred. However i do like how you eye is drawn to the centre of the spiral as it is in focus ad then it leads your eye round the up and out the photo.

AO2 - Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops
In this shoot i used my Nikon 3100 set to manual and manual focusing. The setting where shutter speed 1/125, F stop 8 and ISO 100. I ended up choosing paper to work with as it was the only material that moved and formed in the way i wanted, i did have a look into using coloured card but it would move in the right way so i didn't even take a photo of it.
AO1 - Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations and informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding
For this shoot i used Photoshop in order to heighten the contrast and crop some of my best photos. This allowed me to help define the curves created by the paper as well as see different things from my work.
The first thing i did was remove the dotted line on the paper using the healing brush tool, this is because they formed straight line on my work and where distracting from the overall curves i was trying to show.
The second thing i did with each photo was to look at the contrast and see what the photo would then look like with a higher contrast. This helped the curve to be more visible.
After that i decided to look at how my photos looked in black and white and i preferred them, as a result i added a black and white filter over all of them.
Lastly in 3 of my photos i cropped them in order to remove tips of fingers or to make the curve shown to be a leading line as well as a S or C curve.
All the screenshots above where taken using the snip tool.
AO4 - Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
For the whole series i turned all the photos i have into black and white because it allowed me to increase the contrast and show off the different curves i have found. Also through this I was able to sort of show of the idea of having negative space between things. I believe the way i have looked at this shoot has included the research on curves and the different types as well as incorporated how my artist has used them.
Progression: you must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.
For my next shoot i what to really look into negative space a more as it also came up in work record 4 where the hair on my subject made negative space. I think the best way of accomplishing that is with light. I am going to use Maholy Nagy as my inspiration as he uses light in some of his images and i also like his abstract style.
