Evaluation of Preparatory shoots

In this section you will discuss how your work has progressed technically and aesthetically.  You will also highlight how your work has been influenced by research.

My work has progressed through how my ideas and influence has changed. In my first work record my idea was 'how things worked' and as a result i looked at the engine of two cars. I also took photos around the car so it showed the pieces that move or were used. Then work record 2 was about clockwork and i noticed that i wanted to work on my framing and angles from the last work record and i did achieve this by using a Marco camera. This also allowed me to push my self and look for the different angles otherwise on such and small object there wouldn't have been much to look at. This also helped to improve my framing skills which i then wanted to progress further by look at a larger object and using my camera, Nikon 3100. I also liked how in the clockwork i used the backing to reflect light i wanted to work with a mirror and see how i could use that to improve my framing skills. This idea was really helped by how Linda Murdock used circles to frame her photos as well as this i used inspiration from one of the exam paper photographers, Vivian Maier. Her way of having the mirror reflect her as the subject inspired me to do the same. However i also wanted to show the subject as well as the reflection in the framed shot. This idea for my 3rd work record lead me to change my overall idea to ' The Everyday'.

From this i started thinking about what I, myself use and see everyday. I also liked this idea as it incorporated the two previous shoots. In work record 3 i decided that i needed to include other people in my work as not only do i see myself everyday in any reflected surface i also she many other people. This gave me i idea to look at the curves on the face and circles like the eyes and nose. In this work record i had to look really carefully at the angles i was using so i decided to improve my technical skills by using the studio and also my skills with angles.  This lead me to add Joseph McMillian to my research log. I really liked how he really looked at the facial structures and used makeup to highlight them. However I decided that i wanted to use the natural face and angles to create the same idea, when doing that i also took another look into some macro photography to see if there where any small details and circles or curves i had would other wise missed. During this time i was looking into Moholy Nagy and Edward Weston for inspiration on abstract work in my research log. As a result i decided to experiment in Photoshop with making my edits more abstract to create the idea of why and what is the photographer getting the viewer to look at. I really like how these photos turned out and i wouldn't have managed this with out the research.

Continuing the idea of abstraction i wanted to use repeating patterns as a result i decided to use paper to create my circles and curves. Them either being 3D or 2D as i wanted to make progression on my use of angles. I really liked how through the use of angles i got a few interesting photos where i was able to create depth and movement through the use of implied movement and through the use of moving the paper, twisting and cutting it. It really made me look back at everything i had learnt about angles, and negative space from component 1, as well as look at how much i have learn in these shoots about angles and framing working together. I decided to continue with abstraction in work record 6 where i looked into negative space because of how it had also shown up in the last two work records. I used light and light shades to show this as it was the most effective way as well as linking to Maholy Nagy. I really liked how effective this was and how the light contrasting against the black background ( the negative space ) was really powerful and strong.

Throughout this it clearly shows how much i have learnt technically. Everything from how a angle can make or break a photo, to how the way i frame a photo or even to subject in side a photo is so important to what i can then show through it. My understand of composing circles and curves has improved through research so i know more about the different types and how they are formed. I have also improved with how i view things through a macro lens and how then angles and framing become even more important because you can see every mistake. I have also seen different things in my work like the negative space which i wouldn't have seen otherwise. Every artist i have looked at has got me to look at my work in a different way a few examples being:

Linda Murdock - How she uses circles and curves to frame her photos and how important framing can be in how you get the viewer to look at the photo you have presented.
Joseph McMillian - Circle and curves can be found in places you wouldn't have first thought of and that the human face can be used like a canvas.
Maholy Nagy - Negative space and light allows the circles and curves created to standout more, as well as sharpen the photo.

Overall i believe that looking at the everyday has given me the change to understand framing and how by taking a different angle of something can make a huge difference.
