In this shoot i plan to use a circle mirror in all my photos in order to frame the subject of reflect something in it. I'm going to use my Nikon Camera and the different magnifications on each side of the mirror. This and using a wider angle with allow me to sightly distort some of the photos.
Resources:
- circle mirror with a normal reflective side and a x5 magnification.
- Nikon D3100, 18 - 55 mm camera
Techniques:
- RAW shooting
Research influence:
For this shoot i started using mirrors inspired by my a multitude of my researched artists mainly Vivian Maier and her series with reflections. However i wanted to expand further by looking at using the same mirror and see how i can use it to frame different objects. This reminds me of how Linda Murdock uses circles to frame the focus of the photo. The difference is that Linda Murdock shoots in colour where as Vivian Maier shoots in black and white. I'm choosing to shoot in colour as then i can change my best into black and white as a different edit to the other one which i could do in colour.
Contact Sheet
This image was chosen because i like how the circle mirror is the focus of the whole image instead of it being the reflection. However i am going to use the reflection to show my main focus.
In the second image i like how the wing mirror of the car is the frame of the subject and that is the only bit in focus.
For this image i like how you can see the subject as well as the reflection of that subject in the mirror. I may use this idea in my work so i show my subject as well as the reflection.
The last image was put in here as it shows the refection as the main subject and it framed by the curves of the mirror.
Best Photos ( 4 - 6 )
In the first photo i really like how the reflection is completely central and framed within a cental circle as well. The fact that the camera's circle lens draws you in and then you come out seeing the curves in my hands and hair buns, to then the circles that make the mirror frame. This shows the influence from Vivan and Linda, Vivan being the style and Linda making the photo in colour.
In the second photo i like how i used a x5 magnification mirror to distort the reflection of the camera. This makes it so the camera isnt completely round making it seem off. I really like how i also only have the camera in focus making sure the attention is there.
In this photo i really like how you can see the subject that is being reflected and the reflection of the subject. As well as this i like how the reflection has been magnified and distorted, creating more curves.
In this photo i used a red back ground in the mirror to show the curvature of the bottles refection more. I'm going to Photoshop this image to see if i can enhance that contrast more and make it more prevalent.
This photo has got to my favourite and was inspired by my artists, however i wanted a plain of repeating back ground so the only difference was the circle mirror reflecting myself and the camera. I really like how the repeating pattern is mad up of curvy apples that are the curve shapes inside the curved apple shape, which is then repeated.
In the final photo i saw that the mirror i was using reflected amazing large curved lines of white light onto the walls. I love how this one sweeps allowing the viewers eye to follow with ease, forming a leading line.
Needs Improvement
This first photo is to dark and isn't framed well. I mirror that was meant to form the first circle is out of focus and not fully in frame. As well as this the clock isn't by itself in the photo as there is a bar in the reflection which i didn't want.
The second photo here i actually sort of liked with the position of the clock. However the background is to distracting and pulls the eye to that instead of to the clock and the curves created by my framing there.
In this photo the eye is drawn to the skin of the person taking the photo and no the camera. I think this has to do with the framing for the photo as well as the mirror being out of focus. If i was to retake i would have zoomed out more and pull the frame into focus.
In this photo i like the framing of the flowered bottom of the glass in the circle mirror. However the camera hasn't focused on the glass well and it has blurred the edge which means i lost the clear outline which i wanted. This may have been caused by me not focusing the camera or not having the glass close enough to the mirror.
AO3 - Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress

AO2 - Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops
For this shoot i used my Nikon 3100 camera set to manual and also manual focus. When shooting i used around F stop 6 and a shutter speed of 1/125, ISO 100. I used a round mirror in order to frame my subject and to create a focus point.
AO1 - Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations and informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding
My best photos i imported them into Photoshop and as shown below i first i used the healing brush tool to smooth out and remove the spots and scars on the face.
After that i used the brush tool to cover the background, allowing me to them use the black and white tool to them change only the background, this allows the main focus to stand out more. As well as that it incorporates my to artists as one used black and white photography where the only used colour.
I then decided that the background was still rather distracting so i then cropped the photo so it was square and the mirror touched the edges, making the frame stand out more.
In the second example i took the circle mirror section from this first photo and copyed it.
This was then pasted on top of the other photo where i also used the healing brush to correct any large distracting pieces.
The last step like with every photo in the series i changed the background colours to back and white, using the back and while filter.
AO4 - Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
For this whole series of photos i put them into Photoshop and edited them so that the background was black and white this made hem less distracting. As well as this i cropped some of the photos to make the focus of my photo stand out more, also it connects both of my artists to the series.
Progression: you must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.
For my next shoot i want to improve how i look at a photograph the human face as i would like to see the different angles i could get, that i cant get with my own in a mirror as the camera is in the way. This will help develop the project as well because everyday I see people everyone does so i think that this is really important to have in the project.
