Work Record 6

Plans for shoot : discuss what you planned to do and resources / techniques you will use
For this shoot i am going to look at ceiling lights, lamp shades and light bulbs. I am planning on using these to see the different angles and to see how i could possibly used the shade in order to frame them. As well as this i am thinking to see how abstract i can make them by looking at angles and how i could lay the photos out.

Resources:
- Nikon D3100, 18 - 55 mm camera

Techniques:
- RAW shooting
- Freeze Frame photography

Research influence:
Moholy Nagy was my influence for this shoot the abstract way he uses light in long exposure is really interesting in away where the end produce is almost frantic and chaotic. In contrast to this i am also going to look at lights however i what to use them in the way of freeze frame photography where the camera isn't moving. As a result i will have the light bulb itself and i am really interested to see how this will turn out. Another inspiration is from Edward Weston and his use of negative space as i really wanted to continue that idea and improve upon how i take those types of photos.

Image Bank ( 5 images )

I like how in this photo there is negative space around the light. As a result it acts like a centre point and like moths to the light the viewers eye is pulled towards it like tunnel vision.

In the second photo i really like hot the curvature of the shade has been emphasised, by this halo effect created by the light underneath. Again it uses negative space to draw the eye into the photo main focus.

This photo uses the light to trick the eyes. The viewers eyes are tricked as you think your looking down into the shade however you can also make the argument that you are looking up into the shade. As a view i can't make up my mind this makes it really puzzling.

For the last photo i like how the light is being reflected out of the crystal shade in a star like shape surrounding a central circle. This reminds me of how lights look when looking though my glasses as all light has this type of effect.

Best Photos ( 4- 6 )

In my first photo i was really looking at the star like effect created by the wires coming off the single wire circle. I really liked this photo as it makes the views eyes follow each wire off the photo as it makes them wonder where it is leading to.

For the next photo the over all dome shape did remind me of Edward Weston and his photo of the cabbage / pumpkins. I also like how the C curve is also given this third dimension from the almost spider web looking cover that really rounds it out, almost as if you could step in and around the object.

My third photo i really like how strong the negative space is around the light. This reminds me of the idea of hope and light in the darkness and how no matter how dark it is there is always some light, whether that be a light bulb, the sun or even the moon.

In this photo i really like how defined the C curve is of the light bulb. With a big contrast to the majority of black and how the viewers eye is drawn from the darkness of the left hand side across into the light on the right hand side.

In the last photo i really like how there is the implied ring around the outside from the parts in the top comers. Then how that is then narrowed into the smaller circle which frames the light bulb, that from this angle also looks circle. I really like how the light bulb its self looks like it is holding and protecting the little source of light. Which i really like that i have frame and centred in the middle of the photo.

Needs Improvement

Firstly in this photo i framing isn't quite right in the sense that the tube that i was taking the photo through was slightly to narrow. As a result i if i was to re take i would find a larger tube to take the photo through. As well as that the edge corners needed to have been checked that they were also covered by the white section.

For this photo i really like it however in this shoot i was looking at negative space and it hasn't really got any in the way i wanted. As a result if i did re take i would look at making the area around the light darker.

In this photo the shutter speed was to slow as a result to much light was let into the camera and then over exposing the film. If i when i re took on DSC 0564 i turn it down however i didn't really like the plastic that holds the shade on in the photo.

In the last photo i was to far away from my subject and also it was to dark. I was looking at the shadow and yes i captured it however the photo is a little blurred and it doesn't quite fit right with what the series is about.

AO2 - Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops

For this shoot i used my Nikon 3100 camera set to manual and manual focus. I used the different lights and shades around my house to do this. I decided to use shades over lights, the crystal lights and just the bare light bulb by itself.

AO1 - Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations and informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding

AO4 - Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Progression: you must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.
