Plans for shoot : discuss what you planned to do and resources / techniques you will use
In this shoot is was aiming to take photo where you can see the curves made on the face and hands , for example the face shape as a whole and parts of the face so the eyes where there's each colour and there shape. I am also going to possibly add in a filter colour to part of the face in some of the photos like i did when highlighting the parts in the golden clockwork photos.
Resources :
- tripod
- x2 soft boxes
- Macro camera
- Nikon D3100, 18 - 55 mm camera
Techniques:
- Macro photography
- RAW shooting
Research influence:
My inspiration for this shoot was Joseph McMillian and his experimentation with Macro photography and the curves and lines created by the human face. However in my work i am planing on having side profiles as well to show the overall face and head shape as well as the individual facial structures. As my work will differ from his as i am not going to use make up to highlight the curves and circular shapes. Instead i am planing on using natural face, where the curves are shown through expression, angles and possible lighting contrast if the experiment works. Moholy Nagy is another piece of inspiration as i wanted to use his different way of editing his photos and i am thinking of editing my photos with the idea of using a circle or curve to highlight a certain part of the photo.

Image Bank ( 5 images )
This photo inspired me as it cut out what most people would think of taking a Macro photo of ( that being the eye ) and looking into what else we use everyday. I also like how this image is in black and white and i may look at how my photo turn out if they where changed into black and white.
For this image i liked how it was the expected however there is no make up to highlight the features instead it was left in its natural state, this is where i got the idea to differ from my artist by having no make up.
This is the photo which gave me the idea of the overall picture what everyone truly sees when they see you. I whole face, the shape of the face the curves made by for example the nose and the shape of the head with the hair. It shows structure and in its own way power as the hair is tied back and out of the face, showing the persons openness.
Best Photos ( 4- 6 )
For my first photo i took inspiration from the second photo from my artist where half the face is missing, however i really like how in mine i changed the angle compared to the artist. I really like the new angle as it protarys happiness and also brings in the idea of the third dimension that the artist image didn't.
In the second photo i really like how the creases in the face draw you into the photo through the nose and then they branch in to the many surrounding the eye. However the eyebrow is containing them an forms and nice C curve that draws you to the focus and your kept there by the shadow creating depth cast from the nose.
This photo was inspired by the image back however i wanted to create the depth through the third dimension. I achieved this through the use of angles, i like how the third dimension is created mainly by the focus, the mouth, where it curves around the face. The viewers eyes follow the the curves of the lips.
The next photo was inspired by the third photo from my artist where he used light to highlight the focus of the image. I used the same idea / technique as the artist where i used it to highlight the forehead structure and the S curve that it forms against the background. I also used the idea of negative shape to help create the contrast tho i am going to crop the photo in Photoshop.
In this photo i used the Macro camera in order to zone right into the face and specifically the eye and eyelashes. I framed the photo so only the outside half of the eye was in shot, as what i wanted the main focus of the photo was the strong C curves created by the eyelashes. Which via the use of the Macro camera allowed me to have the eyelashes really sharp and detailed.
For the final photo i used the ear of my subject who had a piecing through it, however i really like to as it help to cut up some of the curves formed. It does this without ruining the large leading C curve that allows the eye to move through the photo. This was inspired by the idea of what people wouldn't normally photograph.
Needs Improvement
To improve this first photo i needed to have zoomed in more to the different parts of the ear so i had curves however you wouldn't see the full photo.
In this second photo i really like the framing of the head where you get the sharp focus of the outline of the side of the face and head. However for improvement i need to get rid of the black bar at the bottom of the photo, which i did by changing the F stop.
In this last photo i don't like the framing of this photo as you can see the background when i wanted it covered by the hair. As well as that its cut of the edge of the lips. I also think if i was to re take the photo i would have changed the angle ever so sightly to.

In this shoot i used two different cameras because my camera, Nikon 3100 can't zoom in close enough like a Marco camera can. As a result i had to take the last 12 photos on the Macro camera in order to get the results i wanted. I was also in the studio to take these photos and i used two soft boxes in order to light the area. When using both cameras there were set too F stop 8, shutter speed 1/125. However on the Macro camera i did have to adjust the F stop a few times from the angles i used. On the Nikon 3100 i used ISO 100 and on the Macro the lowest i could go was ISO 200.

I imported my best photos into Photoshop, and for every photo i edited it in almost the same way as shown below. As there where two options for my idea i looked at both, as a result if i like both versions then i will add both to my final section.
To do this i firstly used the healing brush tool in order to even out and remove anything that was distracting for example spots and large pores. This allowed a smoother photo where i can really like the piece that i want without the eye being drawn to something else.
After that i looked at contrast and colour. For this i used the brightness and contrasting tool to adjust the contrast of the photo, then the colour i used hue and saturation. However the colour didn't need to be changed much the saturation needed to be toned down a little otherwise it was rather distracting.
Lastly i used the shaped tool where i could draw a perfect circle on top of the area i wanted to highlight. Then the selected area i could turn black and white as shown by adding a black and white filter. If i wanted to make the background the part black and white, before i added the filter i would select the inverse of the part i had circled.
All off the screenshots where taken using the snip tool, to show the process i went through and give an example.
AO4 - Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
After my editing i wanted the inspiration from Maholy Nagy to be more pronounced. I accomplished this by doing something more abstract with my work. For this i decided to use Photoshop and create a certain section of the photo to be changed to black and white, while leaving the background in colour. However on one of my photos i preferred to leave the highlighted section in colour and change the background to black and white. I have decided that both edits will be shown below.
This shoot has really go me to think about how i possibly use abstraction in my work and how just by changing one small thing it can have such a big difference. I think my photos are now more interesting and force the viewer into looking at the part i want. This in turns gets them to think about why have i edited them in this way and what i am trying to show.
Progression: you must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.
To develop my project i am planning on sticking to the theme of finding one thing that when moved, shaped, looked at from a different can look very different. As a result i am thinking of continuing with abstraction. I have an idea of looking at material like: paper, card and foam. However i think card or paper maybe the better idea because there more everyday things you would come across.
