For my shoot i am going to look at the parts of an engine, the lights and wheels of a car. I am going to look at the piping for different curves. As well as different parts like the caps on the washer fluid and wheels as there circular. The curved lines could be used to form leading lines, pulling the viewer into the picture, i could use the piping in order to achieve this. I am going to aim to take these photos during the half term week.
Resources used :
- tripod
- Nikon D3100, 18 - 55 mm camera
Techniques :
- wide angle close up on the wheels in order to distort them and the wheel arch.
Research influence
This shoot was inspired by Peter keetman and his series of images 'a week at the factory', i really like the idea of mechanical parts and i think they could make some interesting photos. The inspiration gave me the idea to look not at all the individual pieces or the whole thing but to look at the different aspects. This is to try and show that there would be more to see if you opened thing up and followed the curved lines or if you zoomed out. .

Image Bank ( 5 images )
This image was added to show the different circles, pipe curves and the curvature tanks. It shows many circles and curves through the different elements of the construction. This allows the viewer to try and comprehend the complex structure.
I chose this image as i related to the circles with the tire, wheel frame and nuts, bolt and washers. The way this was framed was so the viewer can see the full circle so they have to use there imagination in order to complete what the image may look like.
I put this image in because it shows different circles but with the use of black and white and contrasts it allows the third dimension to shine through showing not only circles but also curves. However i have noticed i wont be able to take something like the image as this photo was taken were the cover wasn't over the control column yet.
The last image in my image bank is any of a wheel but not only is the full wheel not in the photo a good few inches are covered by dirt. This makes the viewer wonder where has this car gone as well as question how it got so dirty.
Best Photos ( 4 - 6 )
My first photo shows many complex and twisting curves all inter twining with one another. I like how the top pipe has a C curve and also has an S curve in the piping, how this pipe almost encases the rest of the pipes. This photo is of a car engine and is related to my research of Peter Keetman and his work on cars on the production line in his series ' a week at the factory'. This photo reminds me of the human body and all the arteries and veins of the body that help it work, like the way this pipes help the car to work and run.
This photo is taken using the design maker of the car, aldi, and there signature over lapping 4 circles. Each circle is made of 4 equal curves of the same size, making each circle exactly the same. I like how i have framed the circles so they curve out of the photo making the illusion that they could possibly go on forever. I used the inspiration from the inter locking features in Peter Keetman's photos in order to realise the over lapping almost had the same effects.
In the next photo i used the branching pipes in order to command the readers eye and lead them from inside the circle round and out into the darkness with a C curve and out the picture with other pipes. The shadowing on the pipes implies they are curving up and out the circle.
For this photo i took inspiration from the image banks image of pipes. I used the sun to highlight circles of the exhaust pipes and used the shadows to form a 3-D form where the viewer can wonder where they are from and whats on the other end. I used negative space created by the underneath of the car to make it appear like they were appearing out of the darkness, creating more mystery around them.
I used the C curve in this photo in order to pull the eye of the viewer into the photo, creating a leading line. As well as this the use of light on the pipe allows the third dimension to be shown forming a shadow that follows the curved line. This implies that you have come from the darkness, as the background is in shadow into the light, as the fore ground is in the sun and that you are looking back to see how far you had come.
For the last photo i was looking on the outside of the car and used the inspiration from Peter Keetman and the photo of the wheels on a steam train, so i looked at the circles formed by the wheels on a car. Then using the image bank i thought of using wide angle close up photography in order to distort the wheel and the rest of the car. I did this to show a different perspective on the circle wheels and the curved lines on the car, mainly on the wheel arch.
Needs Improvement
In this first photo I didn't frame the photo quite correctly as a result the effect i was going for didn't work. I was trying to have the cap create this effect were the circle became a curve giving the photo a more open appearance as there are other things going on that the viewer cant see. As well as this the camera has been focused right as the edges of the cap are blurry and not very sharp.
In the second photo i just didn't like how it turned out as there was just nothing in it for me, i did not find it inspiring. I think this photo could have been improved with different bits of light so there was more of a defined focus point. As well as this the focus could be improved as well, which would make the curves and circles sharper and easier to follow.
For the next photo i did like the S curve in the metal however the angle was wrong i think that as straight on side view would have been better. As it would have made the curve clear as well as that i could have then blurred the background so the viewers eye could follow only the metal rod up and down the picture. This could have given the effect of mystery and what the curve / also leading line heading to or from.
In the last photo i did like the different circles and curves that were created by the metal work and the wholes with in the frame. However like in the last photo i think a bit of playing around with light and shadows could have made some difference. Plus i'm not 100% sure that i got the right angle, i do like how i have slanted the object however i should have taken more photos but in different angles to see it in a different perspective.

My shutter speed had to continuously change and ranged from 1/125 to 1/25 seconds, on a constant ISO 100.

For my photos i put them into Photoshop and i used the brightness and contrast tool to adjust how i wanted the photo. This helped bring out the blue colour in the photos as shown below and when as that i used the curve to in order to darken certain areas.
AO4 - Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
Progression: you must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.
For this shoot i had to really look at light and angles, so in my next shoot i am planning on using a studio in order to control the light and focus on how to highlight my main focus. I am thinking about using a macro camera and a pocket watch as i like the idea of seeing how things work. As a result i am thinking of shooting the cogs inside.
I need to look at how to compose the photos better using circles and curves. For the research look at Research Log, date 26/02/19.
